Inspired by Barry Ritholtz's discourse on owners' equivalent rent and inflation, I ran some numbers. Above a chart from 1986 of the mortgage payment for a national average fixed mortgage on a national average price home expressed as a percentage of the median income for families of four (I fudged the income numbers for 2005-6).
